MPSB02-05 - Patch Available for Buffer Overflow attack on ColdFusion MX with Microsoft IIS

Summary

ColdFusion MX may be vulnerable to a buffer overflow attack when used with Microsoft Internet Information Server.

Issues

When certain ColdFusion templates with filenames longer than 8,192 characters or with HTTP headers longer than 4,096 characters are requested, IIS can become unresponsive. It is not necessary that the template exists. This could be used to construct a denial of service attack on a ColdFusion MX server.

Affected Software Versions

ColdFusion MX (All Editions, Windows Platform)
when used with Microsoft IIS4 or IIS5
What Macromedia Is Doing

Macromedia has notified customers of the security issues through standard communication channels and released a patch to resolve this issue. This patch is a replacement ColdFusion MX Web Server Connector for Microsoft IIS.

What Customers Should Do

NOTE: Back up existing files before making changes. As always, test the changes in a non-production server before applying the changes to production servers.

Customers using Microsoft IIS with ColdFusion MX should:
Download the MSPB02_CFMX_Windows.zip file containing two replacement files:
jrun.dll - IIS Web Server Connector
wsconfig.jar - Web Server Configuration utility

Use [Control Panel] [Services] to stop the "World Wide Web Publishing Service" (IIS).
Replace the file \CFusionMX\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1\jrun.dll with the updated jrun.dll from step 1.
**NOTE: If you have configured multiple web servers, replace the existing jrun.dll in all \CFusionMX\runtime\lib\wsconfig\[n] directories which contain it.

Replace the file \CFusionMX\runtime\lib\wsconfig.jar with the updated wsconfig.jar from step 1.
Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service.

Revisions

June 27, 2002 - Bulletin first released.
