Techniques will range from web application vulnerabilities such as SQL
injection, file includes and remote command execution; to web server
configuration errors and weak passwords on management systems / ftp.

There are many possible ways a web site could be defaced and a focused
attacker will often rely on multiple vulnerabilities in order to
exploit the system and make changes to the content.
