depends on how you plan the implementation. I ran a pair of snort IDS listenning to around 1.5k servers and it works great i use interface master (just google it) network cards on a decent box with a lot of memory. doesnt flake yet and its been in live for 8-months. 0 issues, though you gotta learn a great deal about creating/calibrating rules.
