Hi,
It depends on what exactly you want from HIDS or what security you want to implement. For instance, LogRhythm SIEM has File Integrity Monitoring feature controlling and reporting and changes or access to a file. It is based on a local agent installed. SIEM is actually not just about processing of logs from servers. If you clearly identify what exactly you want to implement, it is very likely that one of ten market leaders would definitely fit your needs. There is such product as Impreva as well, which is not SIEM, but could secure your servers. I would suggest taking a look at such solution as well. But, the wish list is the first thing to do.

we are trying to build a DMZ with a very strong security. we are considering implmenting HIDS on the servers and in addition to export the the logs of the servers to a SIEM solution.

is it practical to do both? any expiriance regarding this issue? someone?
