securing ad-hoc mode

How do you secure the ad-hoc mode ? Is there a way to have something
like a password/shared-key to be prompted before someone
else can connect to you.
Disabling ad-hoc doesnot seem a great idea..if such a handy feature is
there why not use it securely?
