I have had one other reply off list which pointed at this link which
has a few figures on it.

Something I was mulling over was if you were in a housing terrace and
using a directional antenna you picked up a signal of an AP with a
default ESSID through the wall, could you look up the normal power
output from that AP, compare it with the power level you are receiving
and roughly estimate how many houses away the AP is.
I assume that the figures are too rough and that there is too much
that could be in the way and so affecting signal for this to work but
has anyone had this technique or similar work for them?
