Unless you set a password ARD uses an extended version of the VNC
protocol, whereas OSXvnc doesn't. However, I have experienced some
problems with ARD (session hung after a short period of time when
connecting with a VNC client). I don't believe this issue has been
resolved yet.

I'd suggest to stick with OSXvnc for the moment. For security you can
make the server listen on localhost and connect through an SSH tunnel.
Redstone also has a description on their homepage how you could make
OSXvnc somewhat multi-user-ish [1].

Well, it's still VNC, so yes, it ain't as fast as RDP.

As mentioned above: use SSH tunnels.
