I run ARD here in my company, with the appropriate apple software.

From what I've found with ARD's VNC option, RealVNC doesn't work, and I've
had to use TightVNC to connect to the clients via VNC methods.

There's much more functionality with apple's ARD system than w/ VNC, but
that's not a free solution, now, is it?

Subject: VNC Help/Recommendations

First off, I'd like to say thanks to everyone out there in "Mac" land - this
forum has been really valuable to me, and I have to say, being in the
"newbie" chair again is an interesting experience ;)

I've been trying to get my "Apple Remote Desktop" access in place, and am
having some issues. I'd like to get some recommendations from others on how
you are doing this.

Basically, I'd like to run OSX from my XP machine via "apple remote desktop"
or OSXvnc.

When I set up "apple remote desktop" for access, I can not connect to it
over 5900. I've allowed it in the firewall, and even turned the firewall
off to test. When I try to connect either via UltraVNC or RealVNC from my
XP box, the connection is terminated. A network trace of the communications
(UltraVNC in this case) shows an "Incompatible Version" message.

However, if I set up OSXvnc, (which runs on 5901 since ARD is still running)
I can connect up via both UltraVNC and RealVNC just fine. I'm doing it now
from my XP box.

The question is, should I even worry about ARD since I'm successfully
running OSXvnc? What are the pros and cons? The OSXvnc connection is
encrypted, and it seems to support multiple simultaneous users. However, it
seems a bit "slow." Not in a "sluggish" way, but there just seems to be an
overall "funk" about it. I'm used to the "snap" of RDP for TS/Remote Desktop
on MSFT...

The main thing I'm worried about is security- the connections seem encrypted
from OSXvnc, but I'm not sure what the implications are of allowing remote
access like that - I'm assuming it is similar to RDP on the Win side of
things.

My buddy Steve Moffat is using ARD just fine with the same config I have
without issues.

Any advice?
