An antivirus is not a magic wand. Or a condom. It can not protect you
from unknown threats just like that.
The problem is, threat from viruses is not quite deterministic, and it
relies on constant evolution of viral code and vectors of entry.
Otherwise, there would't be thriving antivirus businesses around - you
would get magical "MultiProtector(TM)" application coupled with your
favorite OS (OS X or just any other OS) and it would screen you from
evil things around you.

But, just like you can't have a miracle flu shot that would prevent you
from having flu anymore, the same goes for computer viruses. They
change. Their entry vectors change (but the vector "gullible user" seem
to be fairly constant one, though).

Therefore, you can't have antivirus that will be 100% effective all the
time. Yes, you get heuristics that might spot a new virus before it is
recognized by the antivirus vendor, but you might get a false positive
as well. And, heuristics is not 100% effective. It's a trade-off.

These days, viruses spread mostly trough the above mentioned vector -
gullible user. However, this is NOT only vector, because (for example)
finding flaw in web browser that would automatically install or run some
external script is something that might infect a lot of people in quite
short time; antivirus software is, in fact, pretty successful in
preventing that.

I for one, do not run antivirus on my Linux boxes, as I do not find it
necessary, but I do run it on my Windows boxes as I think it is more of
a good security practice than annoyance. In fact, I wouldn't recommend
anyone not to install AV on Windows. So far this has saved quite a good
number of (cigarette) butts.
