It strikes me that the below product must work on some peer to peer based
topology which means that all systems must be able to talk to all other
systems. This means that any vulnerability in the product can be used to
compromise every host running the client. Arguably a server client
architecture gives more security and also allows monitoring of activity on
the system, usage stats and appropriate usage.
You can implement an internal Instant Messenger server using existing
Microsoft products:
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/downloads/2000/IMclient.asp
This might be a may more appropriate solution dependant on what existing
systems you have installed.
