CDT files complaint against 180solutions
Published: 2006-01-23

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has filed two complaints with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on illegal and deceptive practices of adware and spyware developer 180solutions Inc., and one of its affiliates. The company is thought to be one of the world's largest purveyors of nuisance adware and spyware, software which is often installed on a user's computer without his knowledge.

The complaint (15Mbyte PDF) is backed by extensive research and spans 91 pages. CDT's press release (PDF) alleges 180solutions, "...through a complicated web of affiliate relationships, repeatedly duped Internet users into downloading unwanted, intrusive software." Alex Eckelberry of Sunbelt Software provides some additional commentary and background information in his blog. The official complaint highlights the need for public policy organizations to help protect consumers from spyware and adware companies that operate on the fringes of the law.

The CDT is a non-profit public policy organization whose mission is to "preserve and enhance free expression, privacy, open access, and other democratic values" in the digital age.
