Symantec delivers Mac OS X security report
Published: 2006-11-14

Security vendor Symantec has issued a detailed report on current Apple Mac OS X threats, covering a wide range of security issues that affect the platform today.

The 29-page Symantec DeepSight report (PDF) was published in its current revision on November 13, 2006 and is being made available through SecurityFocus. It offers an in-depth look at the current threat landscape on Mac OS X and is likely the most comprehensive document of its kind on current Apple security threats.

The research report looks at significant OS X threats including local, remote and kernel vulnerabilities and discusses overall system design weaknesses that contribute to insecurities on the Mac platform. The document also reviews the current state of malicious code, discussing the presence of several viruses and worms and the existence of three known rootkits for OS X.

Security researcher Aaron Adams, who authored the DeepSight report, notes an increased focus on OS X exploit development in recent times. Adams concludes the 29-page report by suggesting a number of defenses readily available to both users and Apple OS developers that will make the operating system more secure.

DeepSight was originally a SecurityFocus early-warning technology and service acquired by Symantec when it purchased SecurityFocus in 2002.

Symantec's SecurityFocus is a community focused, vendor-neutral source of security information that relies on the community for submissions and contributions.
