The SANS Institute has decided to go back to school.
The system-administration training and education organization launched a school on Monday capable of granting accredited degrees for masters of science in information-security management and information-security engineering. Called the SANS Technology Institute, the school will give students credit for courses in information security, systems management and auditing, and the legal and policy issues surrounding computer security, according to a statement.
The announcement comes as the federal government focuses on creating more training opportunities for information security professionals. The National Security Agency (NSA) has designated several schools as Centers of Academic Excellence, a designation that the Department of Homeland Security has also started to use.
The SANS Technology Institute hopes to attract professionals from the private sector for its initial class, officials said on Monday. The school received its accreditation from the Maryland Higher Education Commission on November 16.
