Long prison term for Lowe's wi-fi hacker
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-12-16

A 21-year-old Michigan man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison Wednesday in federal court in Charlotte, North Carolina for his role in a failed scheme to steal credit card numbers from the Lowe's chain of home improvement stores by taking advantage of an unsecured wi-fi network at a store in suburban Detroit.

One would think that Lowe's would be held accountable for not securing their wireless network. It's not like these guys had to crack WEP to get this access. If I were one of Lowe's customers I would be "interested" to know if my credit card number was disclosed and what they are going to do about it...

I agree. It's absolutely NOT an invitation to have sex with her but it is an attention getter and if she was someone you cared about would you want her to be attracting that kind of attention? My point was that it is ultimately Lowe's responsibility to secure their customer's private information and...

Lowe's sucks!!!
Lowe's should have gotten a HUGE smack in the face for this. Granted, I can tell you that they definately lost a customer, ME, but I think that they should have been penalized. Could you imagine a bank running a wireless connection unsecured? They'd get REEMED, so why didn't Lowes? Yes, they may...

Heheh, so true!

Also, the comment about you cannot unsuccessfully attempt to rob a bank and expect to not get serious penalties is dead on.

I read somewhere there was a "perceived potential loss" or something to that effect of > 2 million dollars. This is why the penalty was so harsh. Along ...

If someone comes in your house and assaults you, as long as the door was unlocked, it is only assault (a misdemeanor). How is this a felony? They didn't even assult anyone. They were viewing a credit card number in an unlocked house. Trespassing I can buy, but a felony and 9 years in prison? If...

No way that's an accurate statement. It's criminal trespass. Otherwise it would be legal to walk around in people's unlocked houses as long as you didn't assault them or take anything. ...

Didn't you hear? The new "rules" in this country are as followes.

It doesn't any longer matter what the crime is that you commit and how much damage you actually do. It just matters how much could have potentially been caused. Therefore, we are now busting people for hypothetical scenarios ins...

Good for LOWE'S
That's an interesting argument that if a door is unlocked, you should be able to "come on in". However, these guys did't just look around and leave. They monitored, hacked, altered files to establish a connection to another server and THEN captured credit cards. They were't just out there for everyo...

Yes, murderers often get less than that; especially if they murder "unimportant" people (i.e., economically poor people).

This was a crime against a corporation, which is considered worse than a crime against some unimportant person somewhere. After all, Lowe's generates millions in revenue, mill...
