Hackers plot to create massive botnet

Computer Associates has warned of a co-ordinated malware attack (CMA) described as among the most sophisticated yet unleashed on the net. The attack involves three different Trojans – Glieder, Fantibag and Mitglieder – in a co-ordinated assault designed to establish a huge botnet under the control of hackers. CA reckons that access to the compromised PCs is for sale on a black market, at prices as low as five cents per PC.

I might be wrong here, but I think the use of the term Trojans is wrong here, it sounds more like they are talking about some kind of hybrid worm/virus.

"Trojan: Malicious code that hides behind a legitimate programs waiting for a certain time or a certain program to be ran to release itself."

No, as the first malware opens a hole in security to allow for the follow up infections, it's considered a trojan.

Just like the old trojan horse it has gained entry and left a hole for others to enter without security.

Virus isn't usually used as a buzzword, however worms are often misnamed as ...

Other than normal antivirus and firewall programs is there anything we can do/use to protect ourselves from CMA?...
