Veterans Affairs warns of massive privacy breach

The U.S. government warned on Monday that a database containing sensitive information about veterans and their families had been stolen, after an employee violated policy and brought the data home.

How about separating loginid (SSN)

from password (SSN). If the name and

authentication credential were different

we wouldn't have this problem about

securing SSNs....

As a disabled, former CPA with multiple degrees I strongly recommend the idea of a password to accompany Social Securty numbers would be the most resonable remedy to guard against identity theft arising from the theft of pesonal numbers....

First a breach by taking private data home, then the data is stolen in a burglary? Are you sure the employee is not making money? There should at least be legal action taken and the employee facing time for doing such a stupid act!...

Heads would roll where I work. Not just for the employee that violated policy but the Manager that was responsible for safe guards to prevent the download of that much data by a single individual. ...

Multi-factor? In order to gain access to a persons social security number, we need authentication.. (you are who you say you are)...in the form of two factors. (pin, password, biometeric etc)...

My husband and I have had our information stolen before thanks to the healthcare agency assigned to the military (TRICARE) just 5 years ago and now the same has happened again, both attached directly to government agencies that are supposed to protect and serve the members and veterans of the Armed ...
