Tor hack proposed to catch criminals
Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus 2007-03-08

The Tor network--a distributed system of computers that anonymizes the source of network traffic--has a slew of beneficial uses: Human-rights workers, the military and journalists all use the system. However, the anonymity of Tor has also attracted seedier elements as well: digital pirates, online criminals and, quite possibly, child pornographers.

this is supposed to be totally anonymous, be know the side effects that tor can bring. I think that the main problem is tor being available for windows users, i mean, come on, a child molester wouldnt use something like whatever else....

So you're making a blanket statement that those who are seeking to exploit children are not intelligent enough to use alternative operating systems like Linux or MAC OS? Something tells me that this theory of yours holds no merit. Tor being available to windows users as well as Linux and Mac OS is...

There are already two products out there that stop this type of attack or "Tor break".

1) JanusVM (with Java still enabled)

2) Torpark (with Java disabled)

This attack is not that new, and the underlying idea has been around sometime and well discussed on the Tor treads.

My favorite point ...

To HD Moore's credit however, I'd much rather we have this sort of research done in public than in some back-room government office (where I'm fairly certain it already is)

If he said "I am doing this to further freedom and improve Tor" then I might agree with your statement. But contrary to that approach Moore is also calling for the deployment of nodes with the attack code integrated - I think this demonstrates his disdain for the civil liberties goals of the tor pro...

So, HD Moore found this, but abusive governments like the so-called "People's Republic" of China with resources vastly superior to his... haven't figured it out. You mean to tell me that a police state with a SIGINT/COMINT budget that puts the NSA to shame... couldn't figure out how to discern your...

I don't think you understand fully where HD is coming from. He's a major contributor to the overall security of computersystems. He knows what he's talking about and he does exactly what every security professional should do: give knowledge and tools to the community. He's not a backroom coder who...

The main purpose of using Tor is anonymity. Well, now it's just not so anymore.

I've been using Tor to connect to IRC, mainly to protect myself from hackers. I do not think this is the right way to go since many of us want complete privacy even when one is not doing anything illegal through Tor nod...

Tor was created so that one can be anonymous on internet. The hack is trying to defeat the basic purpose (Whatever be the reason in support of it) of Tor. We are back to square one. I seriously believe that any Tor user will not like that.

We need to have a control model in place, but this is sur...

Well... I'm sure the Chinese government will be happy that HD Moore has helped them to catch activists who want nothing more than the ability to express themselves in a free an uncensored atmosphere which TOR did offer. Nobody is going to give you a medal HD nor a job for that matter. You need to st...

It clearly states in the article that HD's code does not work if the java plug-in is disabled. TOR is still completely functional in that case. Im not really sure what the big deal is. Your chinese activists are safe, if theyre smart and cautious. Not to mention I'm sure the Chinese government d...

or the tools available here?

and mentioned here:
