A recent federal district court ruling upholding seizures of electronic devices, such as laptops and iPhones, at the U.S. border has traveler- and civil-rights organizations worried that personal and sensitive data could be put at risk.

As I read the articles on SecurityFocus.com it seems any of us could have information embedded on our computers, that if we our laptops were opened and search, could be a surprise to us.

Truecrypt *will* help. It's just not perfect, and you have to be careful how and when you shut down. Specifically, don't hibernate, and don't wait until the last moment.

What I'd like to see is a discussion of whether travelers can be compelled to give up encryption keys under threat of penalty. ...

What about removing the hard drive, encrypting it, then shipping it to your destination and also shipping it home? Or ship the whole laptop. Might not be ideal for other portable devices, but taking with you a "clean" smart phone and leaving yours behind isn't a bad idea when traveling anyway; the...
