Using inexpensive off-the-shelf components, an information security expert has built a mobile platform that can clone large numbers of the unique electronic identifiers used in U.S. passport cards and next generation drivers licenses.

The problem is not limited to passport cards. New passport books also have RFID embedded in the covers. I predict the next big thing in high couture leatherware will be a RF-shielded passport wallet....

I guess this only works against passports using BAC (Basic Access Control), so it will stop working when the US starts using EAC (Extended Access Control) instead. With EAC the passport has to recognize the reader before sending anything (2-way auth) instead of the 1-way BAC....

How about placing the RFID embedded article into a microwave oven and cook it on high for a minute? Would this action disable the RFID functionality?...
