An unusually powerful electronic attack briefly crippled nine of the 13 computer servers that manage global Internet traffic this week, officials disclosed Tuesday. But most Internet users didn't notice because the attack only lasted one hour.

I'm not sure, what probably happened is the hackers planted a virus in people's computers that (without the people's knowledge of course) caused the computers to repeatedly send packets of data to the servers. Information overload... kinda like a college student cramming for an exam or 2 or 3...
