They save Pac Man and Pengo for future generations while ducking the copyright police. Being an arcade archivist is no game.

Well, with MAME being the biggest emulator out there you maybe not know it, but there are TONS of other great programs out there, which are more specialized which results in a lower number of games the run, but on the other hand they are often faster, or easier to run or have other advantages ... su...

Just a point - JUST BECAUSE YOU OWN THE ROM (chip) DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN OWN THE ROM (file)!!! In the U.S.:
If you claim the 'backup clause' (USC 17, Section 117, I think [Copyright act, regarding copyright protection of computer software]), case is that the backup *MUST BE AN EXACT COPY*. I.e., ...

I think a lot of regular emulation fans realize just how screwed up copyright laws really are.
Some music fans are beginning to see this too.
If I tape a friend's CD, have I broken the law?
Most people will say yes.
Have I done something immoral?
Most people will say no.
The same applies to ga...

Gutting a Classic Cab?? DON'T YOU DARE!

Okay, so if anybody reading this thinks of "gutting" a classic cabinet like Defender or Tron, then just have a look around ebay or the many other arcade related sites and you will see that they are worth A LOT OF MONEY. People regularly pay into the 1000's for a classic cabinet - even without the ga...

Just remember Tempest 2000, Robotron X, R-Type Delta.
So downloading games from the internet is just as harmful as downloading music files with Napster.
If everyone plays games that were pirated from the net no more new stuff is made and the games industry would die.

rubbish.
you contradict yourself as soon as you open your mouth.
you specifically name games that are RE-MAKES, re-coded, totally different.
REAL old games make very little, except in certain places, and even then, that is few and far between.
If anything, MAME elevates awareness of the ol...

The money made is not from the old games but from remakes.
Now will that remake sell well if no one remembers the original? I doubt it.
If everyone plays games form the net I seriously doubt the game industry will die, but consider this:
MAYBE IT SHOULD DIE. Maybe the music industry should die...

Of course, if the games industry died, and people made games because they wanted to, then we'd be treated to a shitty deluge of rip-offs, backstabbing each other in a futile effort to be the best, and eventually people would want to start charging just a bit of cash because after all, they worked so...

Ever notice that all the games for bleem! you have to buy yourself. Unlike MAME, ZSNES and others, the only way to get a game in bleem! is to own or have the PSX disc. Why then is Sony so hyped on stopping bleem!. I can understand Nintendo protecting the SNES and N64 and GBC because of the rlative...

Yes, they are - and that's also the answer to your question. Sony Corp. is a perfect example of corporate self-interest being top priority, and to hell with their customers. They're utter control freaks. Another example of this (which you may or may not remember, depending on how far back and whethe...

I think video game companies could turn emulation into a profit center

I think that game companies could make money by selling ROM files for games they make or have made. It would promote their brand to more markets. For example, Capcom has done this. Buy a Hotrod Joystick from Hanaho Games, and you get MAME, plus 14 100% legal Capcom Roms on a CD!...

If, say, one of the major game companies still in existence were to sell a CD of thirty or forty of their game ROMs - with MAME attached, I'm certain that I'd be willing to buy a copy for myself - and probably a copy each for some of my friends, who're all missing that old arcade feeling.

Most people aren't going to pay for something they can already get easily for free. Take the small percentage of retro gamers that actually *would* pay for these old games, and you're facing a rather small potential market.
