NSA Proposes Backdoor Detection Center

Declaring hidden malware to be "a growing threat," the National Security Agency's cybersecurity chief is calling on Congress to fund a new National Software Assurance Center dedicated to developing advanced techniques for detecting backdoors and logic bombs in large software applications.

It is true that terrorism can come into play in cyberspace - but why should a terroris bother? they can still circuvment physical security and casue much more NOTICABLE harm.

I think you should consider that there are more to the Internet than ebay and other e merchants. Take a look at Wall Street. How many of the traders would get their job done without a Net connection? How would the market react after a week downtime?

I totally agree with you. Specially one point.

Companies should be responsible for their products. If they want to sell, then make me feel "safe". I mean if my car suddenly goes foobar, who am I to blame?.

Or else...

perhaps I should choose Open SOurce?...

I agree with the previous post. The gross negligence of companies appears to be culturally acceptable however. Fast and cheap will always prevail unless the definition of 'criminal negligence' is changed to include board members of corporations that develop sofware (microsoft). This is a far cry fro...

actually i think this is more to cover their own butts since they use and depend on a lot of commercial s/w and are unsure of what else could be done to the s/w since they don't always have access to the code.

as for finding security bugs in s/w - if you follow this...

On your first point, I would generally agree... who can measure a single life to some data? And, physical security remains just as dismal as electronic security, if not more so.

But, a lot of harm can be done with systems. Not by destroying the data, but by stealing the data and using it.

isn't this what checksums are for? , how many people could be found that COULD audit code for security anyways.
