I think it's pretty obvious that if this attack was political in nature, it was an inappropriate (not to mention illegal) method of voicing one's opinion -- but the somewhat obvious question is; can we trust this (or other companies that have been attacked) with our votes?...

There is no way to prevent an intrusion, unless you do nothing and have nothing to compromise nor disclose (in which case any intrusion is useless - it is impossible to break non-existent glass).
