Cable modem hackers conquer the co-ax

A small and diverse band of hobbyists steeped in the obscure languages of embedded systems has released its own custom firmware for a popular brand of cable modem, along with a technique for loading it -- a development that's already made life easier for uncappers and service squatters, and threatens to topple long-held assumptions about the privacy of cable modem communications.

It depends on the operator. I know of at least a few operators in North America (who I will not name) who still use DOCSIS 1.0, and haven't upgraded to DOCSIS 1.1 yet. There's a lot of DOCSIS 1.0 only modems (although they seem to be supplanted by DOCSIS 1.1 modems running in 1.0 mode).

I always enjoy tales of people conquering the technology they are given - no matter how simple it is.

I remember when my friend made me a small circuit many many years ago to plug into my RS232 port and use my CD player remote control with one of my first computers. I was amazed..

i think it's great that you think it's great when people dominate the simple electronics they get their hands on. Maybe it's because you like the idea of rebelling against an outside force that seeks to control you and all the devices around you.

Why not use the TFTP Sploit with BOOTP to somehow SNMP flash the firmware it seemsl ike there should be a key on there for telling to to request a firmware. ...

Thats what its all about. Take the secure and make it unsecure before someone bad makes it unsecure. Then try to figure out how to really make it secure. Then do it again before the bad guy does. These guys are doing the cable companys jobs for them just not getting paid yet....

Heh. I have Comcast Digital cable Internet and am wondering why I can't browse to their site. Funny, I can ping the Tcniso server and get a response, however, I cannot open a web window to it. Digital Signing will not stop those of adventurous spirit and curious mind. I remember when they said X-Box code had to be signed...ask Bunnie Huang how that turned out. :)
