First off, claims that he was trying to build a legal case should be discounted. There's no reason to believe it, and nothing would prevent anyone doing anything illegial from claiming that they were doing "the right thing".

in 1988 i was working in an company with an IBM AS400 System. The keyboards were as big as an C64 and best of all: with integrated macro recorder...
I got every password because you could start the recorder before login...
That would be an interesting case...but they didnt catch me ;-))...
