War of words rages over Internet taps
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-04-14

The public comment period on a Justice Department proposal to make the Internet easier to wiretap ended Monday with most of the filed comments tracing a clean line between two opposing camps: on the government's side, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who perform wiretaps, allied with companies who sell surveillance equipment and services; on the other, Internet companies who would be forced by the plan to make changes to their networks, along with advocacy groups concerned about slowed innovation and an incursion on Internet privacy.

the only effect this will have is that we will be more aware

of the fact that we are monitored (which happens already).

this will make people adopt encrytpion, which is a good thing,

and as far as i know the US goverment can't

do a MITM attack legally, it can just monitor.

the only thing t...

A quote which I've heard a thousand times, and which took you zero thought to post here. So by that comment you mean what, we should have 100% freedom? Kiss your safety, your worldly possessions, and eventually your own ... goodbye.

Oh, so you have inside information? And you somehow know that monitoring had nothing to do with the breakup of any of these terrorist plots?

The truth is... If I want to avoid monitoring, I'll (at least, if I am not a suspect yet).

Encryption, steganography and such stuff is still there, and, after all, only stupid criminal (or terrorist, or whoever) will use public communictaions in clear text to transfer secret or important messages...

Those are not intrusive, that's why it is OK. And any time I can see if it is closed or not, unlike monitoring, which is completely invisible and transparent.

And basically, yes, they are waste of money ...

This 'so what' attitude is a rather risky attitude to take. It presupposes that government officials and people in positions of power and access will never abuse that power. Who honestly believes that ever single person and employee in our government and law enforcement community is NEVER involved...

The problem is overreaching governmental power and abuse of that power. Ashcroft's justice department is already pushing to no longer need a court order for wiretaps. So where does that leave our "due process"? At what point do we stop worrying about criminals destroying our lives and start worry...

There is no single answer for this problem.

There are too many issues with both, like trying to argue which is a better way of living for humans, a tribal way? a governed way?

both have failures in examples. No system created by humans has worked(or we would still be living under that system)
