According to the Australian researcher who cracked the authentication used by Apple's iTunes software, current-generation Digital Rights Management (DRM) will never work.

Why wouldn't Apple / Music Industry make free clients available for *nix based systems? The money is in selling the songs, not the software (or so I understand)...

apple wants you using apple, look how long it took them to make a windoze ipod. other companies don't see a market need for *nix developement, and it's likely m$ might be tossing some money at that to make sure that need gets kept secret for a while....
