Sasser suspect has fans
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-05-14

The German teenager fingered as the author of the Sasser and NetSky worms may not be popular among IT professionals, but fans of the accused miscreant have already sprung to his defense and, apparently, opened their wallets.

pfft. if the kid was stupid enough to release the worm in the wild without thinking hed get caught, he deserves what he gets... theres a bugtraq security mailing list for a reason, he should have tried posting something worthwhile, rather than releasing something inane....

lol, people that don't have time to keep their computers up to date ?!? it wouldn't have done them a damn good, because Microsoft takes atleast 2 months to address an issue complained about. The real question here is, had the issue been reported to Microsoft before he had released this little peice...

perhaps research a little before you post, MS released a patch several weeks before the virus, This cretin was just taking advantage of admins that hadn't installed the patch yet. I say hang him high....

I could be wrong on this; it could just be some M$ FUD I picked up somewhere, but I heard the LSASS patch was actually released and out for a couple weeks. Speculation then pointing to RE'ing the patch to find the exploit. I give him props though, assuming he found a way to exploit the vulnerabili...

Sasser exploited a vulnerability for which a patch was already available.

Care to try again?

he didn't discover the vulnerability, he just coded the virus that exploits the vuln.

I blame the people who fail to apply security patches for the money lost... I spent about 6 hours a few weeks back cleaning that damn virus from peoples' machines. If only they'd patched a week earlier, or if...

So what if Microsoft had a bug or hole in its OS. The amount of money that businesses have to spend fighting these threats is enormous. If only he wasn't so selfish. He deserves what happens, because he is breaking the law....

It was a wake-up call. It?s not only the job of IT professionals to try to keep the internet free from viruses and worms. Everyone needs to understand what?s going on. As any security person will tell you?.patch, patch, patch. For once, Microsoft had the patch available ahead of time. If you do...

Some of you have got to be kidding. Placing blame on Microsoft? The patch existed, blame the administrator foolish enough to not apply it.

Some of you also think it's justified that if you CAN do a thing you are ok... Sorry, no. I CAN, if I choose, do all sorts of illegal/amoral/immoral things. I...

It is not about patches nor users. If you really want to secure the Internet, then Systems that are not secure enough should not be allowed on the Internet!...

FYI he reused an exploit, and MS issued a patch before sasser's release..

I think one can still consider his code as an unintentional warning, even if it wasted bandwith and rebooted lots of machines.

At least everybody is patched and companies are firewalling port 445 too.

Some might thank him, ...

Just leave him alone. Microsoft is commercial software, which shouldn?t have any vulnerability for the price they want. Why does a business have to continue to pay for Microsoft products (patches and hours of work)? Microsoft should be paying us to run their problem software? We can?t afford to pa...

Totally agree microsoft should have properly tested and picked this bug up long ago, however microsoft are wallet fat and damn right lazy when it comes to actually fixing issues in their OS. They would much rather push out a new OS with old security flaws in place.... however thats no excuse for ex...

I seems like this forum is filled with comments from people that didn't have the knowledge or was to lazy to patch their system.
