Feds say Lamo inspired other hackers
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-09-15

The final act in the saga of Adrian Lamo's hacking adventures ended with a contrite message from the once brash cyber outlaw, and a grim denunciation from his prosecutor, who blamed the hacker for inspiring other computer intruders.

"Whether or not Mr. Lamo sought to inspire those people or was neutral on that subject, the fact remains that we really won't know how many computer hackers Mr. Lamo has inspired by his misdeeds. We won't know what damage those hackers will do."

President Bush gave me an example that when you wa...

Thats so crass. I guess since I drive a black car now everyone driving a black car who has a wreck was "inspired" by me. Hogwash!

Granted our Mr. Lamo shouldn't have really done black hat stuff to the folks in question yet he has acknowledged that and seems to be quite willing to pay for what...

That's ridiculous. I don't think that Lamo should feel remorseful for what he has done. He provided a sorely needed service to those companies. Think of all of the money that was saved by those companies because of him. Those people needed to have some fear put into them....

I'm very disappointed that Lamo expressed remorse for harming other people or ever attempted to excuse his hacking. No self-respecting sentient being should express remorse for harming other people, who are essentially animated lumps of flesh who aren't you. Lamo's only regret should be that he got ...

Two things never to do 2004-09-17

I have learned by the example of others to never do one of the following:

1) insult a cop

2) disrespect the law in front of a judge

The guy who I saw do the former woke up in a drunk tank, a bloody mess. The guy who did the later got a hell of a sentence.

Lamo did the right thing - for a...

'At Lamo's sentencing, assistant U.S. attorney Joseph DeMarco said Lamo had caused serious financial harm, and was responsible for "a great deal of psychological injury" to his victims. "Until they got to the bottom of what Mr. Lamo had done, they were put in real fear, and I can tell your honor, fr...

Well it's obviously a PR ploy. what gets me is the "damage" he caused. by that the company is referring to all the time and resources spent on the security audit after he politely told them he had breached their systems, and offered to help fix it, no less. these are audits that SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED...

"said Buchwald. "Mr. Lamo is now I think 22, 23. He will have a felony conviction on his record the rest of his life."

Hey! That shouldn't stop him from getting a job in the Bush administration! It might even be a requirement. Then, of course, there are always Presidential Pardons and remember k...

Psychological Damage? How week are these feeble people's minds anyway? Someone must have had a bit of an overreaction.

Then again, it might have been caused when the boss decided to have an IT meeting the next day?

The conclusion of the Dec 5 2001 article by Kevin Poulsen "Lamo's Adventures in WorldCom" proved prophetic. What if Lamo had forseen or known the true nature of Worldcom's business practice? Would he have been so-ever helpful? I wonder and look what it got him. As for Worldcom?

"In June 2002, an ...

A little dissapointed at the responses to this article. Had Lamo identified the security problem with the proxy servers and notified the NYTimes at that point, yes he would've done good. But once he breached the network, hacked passwords and modified a database it became a criminal action. Think abo...

So why didn't any of the companies Lamo help step up and support him in his rulings? By pressing such harsh charges in Lamo after he told New York Times about their exploit, it's clear their network department did not know what he had done and instead of turning to logical reason, turned to fear an...

I am glad he got what he deserved. The punishment could have been more sever, but the Judge acted accordingly and handed Lamo a just sentence.

What Lamo should have done?was open a consulting company and begin trying to help these vulnerable companies. Why do something for free when it can be d...
