I'd wager another factor is the fact that the kids return home from college (as has been the case in my family) and clean up the mess that the parents made over the school year. When mom and pop are complaining the computer is running slow, junior will more than likely re-install windows on the mac...

Hundreds of thousands of computer geeks were trapped visiting family and cleaning off spyware, etc. I know I was... :)
I'd bet that if you collected the download stats for Spybot, Adaware, AVG, and MSAS, you'd find they spiked over the holiday weekend....
