It should be partially due to the taiwan earthquake. Several cables are disconnected because of the earthquake. It is extremely slow or even impossible to access some websites in Asia....

more likely that the nerdy nephews decided to fix the computer instead of socializing with the evil aunt sara(substitute name here) that still squishes your cheeks and calls you georgie (substitute crappy nickname here) even though you are 27....

surely this also has to do with tech aware children going home for christmas and giving their parents pc's the yearly cleanout and update?

I know i found 3 virus's and lots of spyware on my folks machine...

All in all the biggest problem that most novice computer users seem to have is simple spyware.

While it is true that the concept of bots is frightening to many users spyware is the one biggest concern.

I'd wager another factor is the fact that the kids return home from college (as has been the case in my family) and clean up the mess that the parents made over the school year. When mom and pop are complaining the computer is running slow, junior will more than likely re-install windows on the mac...

Hundreds of thousands of computer geeks were trapped visiting family and cleaning off spyware, etc. I know I was... :)

I'd bet that if you collected the download stats for Spybot, Adaware, AVG, and MSAS, you'd find they spiked over the holiday weekend....
