Therein lies the conundrum. How would the student know the exploits exist without exploiting them? Rarely can you finger for an exploit, unless you have a test system. You're judging that the kid was unethical. Clearly the kid was morally driven. While he could have approached the situation differne...

He may of been driven by good morals, but his ethics stink! That is why he is being punished. Once he found out the exploit(s) existed, he should of stopped there, and then approach the school for further pen-testing. Whitehats have to deal with the fact that they might be told NO. Better than going...

The school have to punish the the white hat because, if they wouldn't every black hat wouldn't need to cover their tracks
