Unwanted e-mail saps security budgets and wastes everyone's time. It's nice to see Bill Gates take some responsibility for stopping it.

All of these 'war against spam' articles are getting a bit interesting. I don't like spam and I wish that people would stop sending it. However, the guy posting that comment about 'e-mail' being free and open is completely accurate. Basically, if you don't want mail from certain parties, filter o...

If you can send it, then I can charge you to delete it.
BTW, all you spammers need to read the fine print when spamming certain Domains, I charge 20.00 per email for me to clean and disinfect the message then to transfer it to the trash bin.
go ahead and set up a merchant account with me. LOL...

At least the companies have to pay for the flyers to be sent out. Spam causes me charges for my internet connection, it costs me money to have space for all the spam. Flyers i simply throw into the bin in the knowledge that it did cost some substantial amount of money to produce them. In my eyes onl...

In some ways, yes, I do agree that e-mail is free. However when used to innundate mail servers with millions of messages (especially in the case where said servers normally handle multiples of thousands) it becomes an issue of SPAMmers foisting their advertising costs on the consumers. I don't have ...

The company I work for currently runs its own statistical spam filter because we found we couldn't trust DNS-based blacklists not to produce large numbers of false positives. I certainly don't think we'd trust Microsoft to decide for us what is and isn't spam!

Microsoft owns hotmail, which is one of a number of mail systems such as aol and wanadoo that spammers heavily use to abuse the rest of us. Hence, Microsoft's interest and incentive in stopping spam.

I agree that securityfocus should have a whole new section for spam.
I'm in early testing of our SpamTracking tool, and it's really effective. It not only tracks them down, but it also can "stick the spam up the ass of the spammer" literally.

Scummy companies can generally avoid the law, look at Sharman Networks/KaZaA. Thats a company publishing a blatently illegal product, but they've managed to twart some of the most rabid laywers in the business.

Currently snail mail "spammers" have to pay the postal service for the privalage of sending you junk mail. Considering this, I don't believe that charging the sender would stop spam, however it would tend to mean it was more targeted, and thus more likely to generate a response, so Mr CEO would be ...

Not to put too fine a point on it, but KaZAA isn't an illegal product, blatant or otherwise. It is a product that is most frequently used to acheive illegal ends. There are, too, many legal uses of the FastTrack network, such as inedpendant music, free/open software, home-made artwork/movies, etc.

Microsoft can't end my spam. Spamassassin already did that -- at no charge, with me in complete control, with no need for any centralized anything. And I brought 1200 users along with me.

I consider spam almost as invasive as a telemarketer, but not quite. I personally have never really had a problem with it, but if I were getting 50 a day, which some of my fellow associates do, then I would have an issue with it.

It is fairly obvious what they are upto.
1. Divert attention away from their lack of security.
2. Set it it people's minds to adopt their yet to be announced for-a-fee mail service.
No doubt the fairies and goblins at Microsoft are conjuring up some "internal" internet mail message protocol...

I can see where the spam issue is going to be equated with the telemarketer issue but the two are very different for at least two reasons. First, telemarketing is a new thing- it changed our perception of the telephone and we didn't like that (It also changed the terms of telephone service, in that ...

I certainly would like to see Microsoft help out in the war against spam, but not by attempting to reinvent the wheel again. Rather than starting from scratch, why not lend your corporate/technical muscle to existing projects such as SpamAssassin, and make it easier to link that into Exchange Serve...
