What you say makes perfect sense. I'm a little surprised MS hasn't done this already. Sell an OS w/all the bells and whistles for $250 and charge $100 a year for contiuous updates. Sell a lessor version of the OS and still charge outh the wazoo for updates.

What good was it when they never updated it's viral signatures? I think this is more smoke blowing by the Microsoft PR department. They ...

and this was also back in the day when you had to manually install a TCP/IP stack in order to be able to get on the net, how were you supposed to update your virus profiles, when in many cases there were so few viruses to worry about in the first place, the old MSDOS was not a network based OS, so i...

Most of the non Microsoft applications (Lotus Notes, SAP, inhouse developed applications etc) are usually tested on a particular set of versions of an operating system. There is always a lag between release of a new version of windows and support announcement by the application vendors.

I have been reading about Microsoft's entry into to the anti-virus arena and continue to be surprised that no one examines their last anti-virus entry.

Maybe Microsoft can learn from the GiantAntiSpyware GUI! MSFT left the Giant Software UI virtually unchanged (thank goodness). Now if only they can move some of the good UI elements into other products....

If MS does offer this AV/AS software as part of the OS, I will be willing to bet it will take a LARGE chunk of the consumer market from McAffee & Symantec. End users most often don't know how good or bad the end product is. What they know is that they have it installed, why buy something else?...
