My wife and I wrote a book "MySpace Safety: 51 Tips for Teens and Parents" that has as its primary goal the education of parents (so that they can understand what social networking is, why it's important to their teens, why prohibiting it solves nothing) so they can speak with calm reason to their t...

You're absolutely right, Scott, and I think it's worth emphasising the positive side of these social web sites too. My daughter's have richer social lives than I ever did as a teen, they communicate intensively using the 'net, as well as their own phones, and they are more mature and streetwise beca...

The great challenge of parenting for me has been the need to balance the safety of my children with the need to teach them the benefits of intelligent risk taking. Frankly, I don't think I'm that good at it myself, and that's not a knock on my parents, they certainly did their best. What scares us, ...

The title says it all! A place without parents. Assuming for the moment that your statement later in the article "that parents worry" is true the preceding statement about parents not allowing the listed activities is not so universally true. As your example illustrates and the statistic support the...

Thank you for this truth-telling article! I'm a fan of MySpace, and have had it since it's first year. All the bad publicity it gets with teenagers is partly attributed to what goes on at home, and how parents are effectively monitoring their child's daily activities. There are a lot of factors, ...

How about this for a brilliant idea, check your child's computer activity. In our house it is a rule, you can have a myspace but I check it and have full access. I check her email too. you would be surprised how many intelligent, caring parents don't even think of doing this!...

Seriously, you do that? I guess it's awesome that you are that involved with your kid and really care about her safety and outside influences. A lot depends on how old your child is and how mature she is for her age. I don?t honestly have any real insight on any of these facts but I?ll just say- tha...

While I agree with checking emails, and myspace profiles and having access...I do, too. However, not all parents are even aware that their children are doing this. The single mom working two jobs so she can support her kids is simply not available to oversee every moment...life gets tough. I'm gl...

Not the best example in the world--getting a teen to do homework falls somewhere under the heading of "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. You can also lead a youth to knowledge, but you can't make them think. I can't for the life of me force my now 15 year old son to do his...

Oh, please, I'm so tired of people blaming parents for everything. This is a business that publicly states that they are trying to enforce security, but yet their efforts continually prove to be inadequate. If I purchase any product from a vendor, and their support and warranties are inadequate, I...

This is an excellent article. However, it still does not address the fact that there is no verification of age required to post an account on my space. Me personally do not think that myspace is a bad site for teenagers. They get to meet new people. Most of the teenagers that are sexually abused on this website brings it on themselve, they will lie about their age or talk about things that doesn't need to be associated with people you do not know. ...

I have many issues re: Mr. Granneman's article re: MySpace, however, I do have to publicly respond to one statement in particular.

Although I believe My Space bears some responsibility, I think you are way off base. If some people would parent instead of just having babies and letting those babies do what they want, there probably wouldn't be as many problems as there are. Instead we have let the gov't. step in and tell us ther...

I hate to say, if a person is trying to sell him "pipes" then the seller already knows your son, as for canceling the account, it will take emails from you, I know I just went through this, and the child was under the 14 age limit, so keep e-mailing them, it took 2 weeks for me to get my wifes daugh...

I will disagree with the author, every parent now remembers what they did as a young teen, socializing yada, yada, think back, myspace isn't for expression, it is for exploitation and group meetings, I don't mean adults exploiting our kids it the other kids. Is the writer of this piece a parent? If so, I'd like to see how you deal with your own kid if they were to use Myspace in a way that was damaging to their health or mind. It is dangerous.
