Christmas Shopping: Vista Over XP?
Federico Biancuzzi, 2006-12-05

Microsoft has announced Vista's release dates. From a security standpoint what choice should consumers take during this Christmas shopping season? Most will be faced with Windows XP only or Windows XP with Microsoft's Express Upgrade option to Vista. Federico Biancuzzi interviewed a wide range of security researchers and anti-virus folks to get some consensus on the security of Vista over Windows XP for consumers, with some advice for corporate users as well.

Yawn. At this point I have all but given up on Microsoft. At home I run Mac OS X exculisvely and enjoy the benefits of secure unix OS with every possible utiity for email, word processing, photography video and audio I could imagine. At work, well is Sun Solaris.. and Windows 2003 servers. 1...

Mac OSX hardly counts as being "secure". Look at the recent BIDs, and you'll see a number of issues.

IIRC, I've read on several places that it is in fact *not* as secure as hoped.

And Solaris isn't much better either....

This question is completely irrelevant. Everybody expects Vista to provide better security than XP once properly developed and released, but people don't realistically have the choice of Vista for the holidays.

Good job SecurityFocus, you've managed to ask yet another question that nobody cares ...

Hey sweetie,
u missed the point :)

The fact should be seen in the other way: if you want to buy a PC with XP you should do that right now, before Vista is on the market. Later it would be difficult.

So, the extended-question-to-help-you-understand-better is: from a security standpoint, should...

In practice, that's not really true. XP will be available for some time after Vista, even if only through back-channels.

You missed the other half of my post, though: there's a universal consensus that Vista is more secure than XP, and so this article is irrelevant to security. Anyone with a ma...

How can exist a "universal consensus that Vista is more secure than XP" if "the choice of 'Vista Over XP?' does not exist at this point in time" ?

Check all the answers. Not so pro-Vista...

The truth is that in the long run it is expected that Vista will provide a safer environment for the user than XP does, because of a better architecture.

But I wouldn´t advise a security conscious user to adopt Vista in the first moment. It´s better to wait and see. An operating system is a huge ...

You can find several sites over the net with several "underground" reviews about the system, and it sucks!

Its simply a very bad developed copy of some OS like OSX and Linux, but it sucks anyway!

Gentlemen, although Microsoft Vista will be alot more enhanced with both security and graphics. Microsoft Windows XP will continue to be the most pre-dominant OS until late into 2007 or mid 2008. I've said this for many years now. Vista's release will generate a small output of generation to the pub...
