Charney an Ominous Microsoft Pick
Tim Mullen, 2002-02-11

What are we to make of Microsoft tapping a former hacker prosecutor and IP lawyer for its top security spot? Nothing good.

The information security community has grown out of academic circles and has entered the main stream. However, it seems that it wants to hold on the very academic idea that ALL information should be free-flowing with little or not restriction.

"This philosophy works great in labs and universities. However, in the real world, where businesses base their
existance on information, full disclosure (i.e. disclosure without allowing the vendor to publish a patch first) is
wreckless and irresponsible. (To all the flamers: I don't work for ...

My $0.02: Until corporations such as Microsoft act responsibly in identifying and fixing security holes in their products, I fully support full disclosure of product security vulnerabilities. Infomation Security is not so new that it has just "grown out of academic circles", it has been around a while.

Full Disclosure is not some FSF inspired "information should be free" movement. It has grown from a desire to make software vendors even somewhat responsible ...

Interesting points, and they will probably come to pass, however, they will probably be independant of one another.

The link between Charney and DRM OS is a little thin, but the link between DRM/OS and the DMCA is worth investigating. I look forward to reading stories on it.

Your mention o...

We should boycott this Bill Gates guy until he makes his own code that isn'nt stolen and full of holes. This Lindows os will proably out sell MS when finally introduced to the public, and you won't have worry about this security guy they hired. GOOOOOOOOOO Lindows....

I have to agree with Tim and say that I am very disappointed in Microsoft's selection of Charney. Given all the criticism MS has had to endure (mostly deserved I'm sorry to say) in the realm of Security, it is a missed opportunity to not have hired an InfoSec heavy hitter. Instead, they hired a la...

Actually, Microsoft DID try to hire an infosec heavy-hitter. I know someone who was offered the job, and turned it down.

He told me that he got to looking at .net and realized that it was about "taking over the world" (his words). He turned down the offer on ethical reasons.

It may be that a...

That's precisely why Charney is an ominous pick for the choice of Chief Security Strategist -- the fact that he is a Washington, DC lawyer implies that Microsoft's strategy will consist mostly of political/legal maneuvering (i.e., DMCA gamesmanship) instead of technical excellence....

An unfortunate choice. Again it goes to the Microsoft way of doing things, "Let's find some other way around our problems."
We will prosecute the "hacker" and hopefully it will scare others and they will leave us alone. Clean up and ensure quality? Apparently this is an unreasonable idea. Conspira...
