thanks for this article. Even though alot has been fixed on today's technology against such attacks, as you stated, many of us do NOT understand how it is DONE or how to prevent them.

I am a IRC oper and I see constand DOS and DDOS attacks done daily on the server.Not to mention the many drones and...

Of course, all those attacks are well-known, and it's very much possible to defend against all but the bruteforce bandwidth exhaustion attack, launched from hosts that are completely not under one's control (which requires cooperation with upstream).
