"... impart the wonder that is networking to those who are very new to the field." ??? This article doesn't explain any basic concepts at all. In my oppinion it is impossible to understand this article if you are new to networking concepts....

Hi Michael,

In my opinion the article does explain basic concepts. There comes a point where one must apply themselves and if necessary memorize theory by rote. That memorization is generally useless, you have to being learning at some point, and this article is it imho. Many thanks for your comm...

Don,

1. when the stateful firewall at the requestor remembers outbound packet state, does it remember anything other than the src and dest IP and port? Like tcp connection or HTTP request info?

2. How long does the requestor firewall remember the state of a packet...

Hi JWeiler,

The host firewall remembers only the quintuple ie: src ip and port, dst ip and port. The length of time the f/w remembers this for is more dependant on the tcp/ip stack values I would think, though that said I am not %100 sure....

A relatively disappointing article given that you would still have to be very network savvy to even begin to understand what happens. A tutorial article on the packet level interactions for a relative technical lightweight is still needed and this isn't it. I guess I need to sit down and do it ins...

Don,

1. how long does the firewall remember outbound packets, in order to match up inbound packets to requests? Does that depend on memory size of the firewall?

2. do the firewalls capture more than src/dest IP:Port info to apply a rule to? like HTTP protocol info - outbound request is a Get and...

good article for begginers parker, but somehow i feel a begginer should know how a packet travels between two computers first. Simple point to point connectivity between two computers through twisted pair without any routing device.

Hi Dhawal,

The knowledge level for a beginner is one open to debate, and is such, as evidenced by some of the feedback to this article. To me there is an ocean of difference between newbie and novice. Many thanks for your feedback....

Hi Anonymous,

Well, I for one love Star Trek. It embodies the greatness that man could accomplish were we all united without prejudice, or other such human frailties. Don't know what to tell you honestly, the line I quoted was very appropos in my mind. Sides, who cares what people think of us. ...
