Dante
Added 2003-07-31
by Inferno Nettverk A/S, info@inet.no
Dante is a free implementation of the proxy protocols socks version 4, socks version 5 (rfc1928), and msproxy. It can be used as a firewall between networks. The package consists of two parts, a socks server and a proxy client which supports socks, msproxy, and HTTP proxies. Commercial support is available.

HTun
Added 2002-08-14
by Moshe Jacobson
HTun is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) interface that allows you to create a fully bidirectional IP-layer VPN over an HTTP proxy or just over port 80, allowing you to bypass restrictive firewalls and use any IP-based service you desire.

DeleGate
Added 2002-03-27
by Yutaka Sato, ysato@etl.go.jp
DeleGate is a multi-purpose application level gateway, or a proxy server which runs on multiple platforms (Unix, Windows and OS/2). DeleGate mediates communication of various protocols (HTTP, FTP, NNTP, POP, Telnet, etc.), applying cache and conversion for mediated data, controlling access from clients and routing toward servers. It translates protocols between clients and servers, merging several servers into a single server view with aliasing and filtering. Born as a tiny proxy for Gopher in March 1994, it has steadily grown into a general purpose proxy server. Besides proxy, DeleGate can be used as a simple origin server for some protocols (HTTP, FTP and NNTP).

tsocks
Added 2002-03-18
by Shaun Clowes,
SOCKS V4 proxy (usually on a firewall). tsocks intercepts the calls applications make to create TCP connections and determines if they can be directly accessed or need the SOCKS server. If they need the SOCKS server they connection is negotiated with the server transparently to the application. This allows existing applications to use SOCKS without recompilation or modification. tsocks is a wrapper library for the libc connect() call. Changes: Fixes to compile on Solaris 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8, and fixes for makefile problems. Fixes were made for bugs with setting socket options, and for problems with unresolved symbols. Support was added for forcing all applications to use TCP DNS so it can be transparently proxied.

AATools for Windows is a great set of utilities for analyzing network properties. It will test pretty much every network operation you could want to know about. AATools will check Email properties, Scan ports and proxies, give network and system statuses, clean up unnecessary registry entries in your registry, etc. The information it conveys is easy to digest and setting up a test is likewise very simple. A worthwhile download for anyone wanting to gather info on their network or PC. AATools should be a part of your security toolkit and you should employ them regularly.

Paranoia Iptables Firewall
Added 2002-03-05
by Harald Skoglund
Paranoia Iptables Firewall is a firewall designed specifically for standalone computers in insecure networks such as campus LANs and co-location facilities. It is modular and easy to update at runtime without the need to flush the entire firewall-ruleset. The last last update time for modules is cached, allowing altered rulesets to be reloaded easily. Portscan detection and rate-limiting SYNs are supported. A good mechanism for IP/port-based ACLs is employed. A single file listing the allowed connections for every open port/portrange is required. MAC-addresses for LAN connections can be checked against corresponding IP-addresses. Optional basic NAT support is included.

Squid
Added 2002-03-04
by Duane Wessels, wessels@ircache.net
Squid is a high-performance proxy caching server for web clients, supporting FTP, gopher, and HTTP data objects. Unlike traditional caching software, Squid handles all requests in a single, non-blocking, I/O-driven process. Squid keeps meta data and especially hot objects cached in RAM, caches DNS lookups, supports non-blocking DNS lookups, and implements negative caching of failed requests. Squid supports SSL, extensive access controls, and full request logging. By using the lightweight Internet Cache Protocol, Squid caches can be arranged in a hierarchy or mesh for additional bandwidth savings. Squid consists of a main server program squid, a Domain Name System lookup program dnsserver, some optional programs for rewriting requests and performing authentication, and some management and client tools. When squid starts up, it spawns a configurable number of dns server processes, each of which can perform a single, blocking Domain Name System (DNS) lookup. This reduces the amount of time the cache waits for DNS lookups.

proxyfloppy Linux distribution
Added 2002-02-15
by anonymous
Proxyfloppy is a floppy disk that contains a bootable Linux system with 3 different types of web proxies ( Triangleboy, Junkbuster, and SOCKS) and some added tools. The goal is to make it simple for people with an always-on Internet connection to turn their desktop into a anonymous proxy server during the time that the computer would normally go unused. The proxy defaults are very safe for your computer and the Internet as a whole. Running an anonymous web proxy is a public service for people stuck behind firewalls that limit the content they are allowed to see.

TrustWall HTTP Proxy
Added 2002-02-13
by Sam Ng
twhttpd is a secure HTTP proxy. twhttpd is developed in a scenes to help the protection web servers (and web browser clients) by checking the HTTP protocol header data. The design has already put most modern web base attacks into consideration and hence can protect most web servers without very in-depth knowledge about the attacking techniques. On the other hand, the script like configuration file also makes the proxy very much flexible to fit into many different special environments.

squidGuard

by Pål Baltzersen, pal.baltzersen@ost.eltele.no
squidGuard is a combined filter, redirector and access controller plugin for Squid.
