Monitoring Application for Resources and Servers
Added 2003-06-16
by Brian H. Trammell Ben Parrot
MARS is a host based system monitoring tool. It contains a distributed agent, SPOT, which is placed on each host. The MARS server can then obtain information about each of the machines the agent is running on, including status, load information, disk activity and memory information. MARS is Java based, and should run on any Unix supporting Java, as well as Microsoft Windows products.

Sysmon
Added 2003-05-20
by Jared Mauch, jared@puck.nether.net
Sysmon is a network monitoring tool designed to provide high performance and accurate network monitoring. Currently supported tests include monitoring of SMTP, IMAP, HTTP, TCP, UDP, Radius, NNTP, and POP3 servers. It also includes the ability to ping hosts and routers. Sysmon has the ability to understand real network topologies, including the ability to monitor multiple paths and only report the actual device that is down instead of a router that is down, and all the hosts behind it.

Secure Cryptographic Instant Messaging
Added 2002-08-07
by The Project SCIM team
The Project SCIM application allows you to send Encrypted Instant Messages to your friends and other contacts. The software is free for non-commercial users and contains a load of cool features.

FCheck
Added 2002-07-31
by Michael A. Gumienny
FCHECK is a very stable PERL script written to generate and comparatively monitor a UNIX system against its baseline for any file alterations and report them through syslog, console, or any log monitoring interface. Monitoring events can be done in as little as one minute intervals if a system's drive space is small enough, making it very difficult to circumvent. This is a freely-available open-source alternative to 'tripwire' that is time tested, and is easier to configure and use.

NFSWATCH
Added 2002-04-08
by Dave Curry and Jeff Mogul
NFSWATCH allows for the monitoring of NFS requests to any given machine, or an entire local area network. It monitors mostly NFS client traffic. It also monitors the NFS reply traffic from a server in order to measure the response time for each RPC.

Squid
Added 2002-03-04
by Duane Wessels, wessels@ircache.net
Squid is a high-performance proxy caching server for web clients, supporting FTP, gopher, and HTTP data objects. Unlike traditional caching software, Squid handles all requests in a single, non-blocking, I/O-driven process. Squid keeps meta data and especially hot objects cached in RAM, caches DNS lookups, supports non-blocking DNS lookups, and implements negative caching of failed requests. Squid supports SSL, extensive access controls, and full request logging. By using the lightweight Internet Cache Protocol, Squid caches can be arranged in a hierarchy or mesh for additional bandwidth savings. Squid consists of a main server program squid, a Domain Name System lookup program dnsserver, some optional programs for rewriting requests and performing authentication, and some management and client tools. When squid starts up, it spawns a configurable number of dns server processes, each of which can perform a single, blocking Domain Name System (DNS) lookup. This reduces the amount of time the cache waits for DNS lookups.

squidGuard

Anger

by Aleph One
This program implements: a) A PPTP challenge/response sniffer. These c/r can be input into L0phtcrack to obtain the password, and b) An active attack on PPTP logons via the MS-CHAP vulnerability to obtain the users password hashes. Notice that this also generates the password hashes of the new password the user wanted to use. These can be input into L0phtcrack to get password, into a modified smbclient to logon onto a SMB sever, or into a modified PPP client for use with the Linux PPTP client.

TCP Wrappers
Added 2001-10-22
by Wietse Venema
The tcp_wrapper package by Wietse Venema. Formerly called log_tcp. Allows monitoring and control over who connects to a hosts TFTP, EXEC, FTP, RSH, TELNET, RLOGIN, FINGER, and SYSTAT ports. Also includes a library so that other programs can be controlled and monitored in the same fashion.
