Long prison term for Lowe's wi-fi hacker
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-12-16

A 21-year-old Michigan man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison Wednesday in federal court in Charlotte, North Carolina for his role in a failed scheme to steal credit card numbers from the Lowe's chain of home improvement stores by taking advantage of an unsecured wi-fi network at a store in suburban Detroit.

Heheh, so true!

Also, the comment about you cannot unsuccessfully attempt to rob a bank and expect to not get serious penalties is dead on.

I read somewhere there was a "perceived potential loss" or something to that effect of > 2 million dollars. This is why the penalty was so harsh. Along with, I'm sure, an example was to be made of this guy. Especially since he was on his last month of probation from a previous computer crime, that probably made them more easily justify making an example of him. Bummer for this guy..
