Long prison term for Lowe's wi-fi hacker
Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2004-12-16

A 21-year-old Michigan man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison Wednesday in federal court in Charlotte, North Carolina for his role in a failed scheme to steal credit card numbers from the Lowe's chain of home improvement stores by taking advantage of an unsecured wi-fi network at a store in suburban Detroit.

If someone comes in your house and assaults you, as long as the door was unlocked, it is only assault (a misdemeanor). How is this a felony? They didn't even assult anyone. They were viewing a credit card number in an unlocked house. Trespassing I can buy, but a felony and 9 years in prison? If you leave your doors unlocked, you shouldn't cry when people just walk on in. It's definitely an invitation. I don't think this compares to rape in any sense. As far as I can tell from the article, the credit card numbers weren't even used. I do think there should be a penalty for having the intention of criminal damages, but 9 years is definitely stiff.
