Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus 2005-02-09

In the first case of its kind, a California video game maker is suing an entire community of software tinkerers for reverse engineering and modifying Xbox games that they legally purchased.

While I completely understand Doug's opinion I have to disagree. Saying that the author should have rights to keep someone from doing something to a game character and sharing it with his or her friends is like J-lo saying look at my videos guys but don't get turned on by it or I'll sue.

If these guys were selling the content, I'd be 100% behind the company, saying they should sue.

But in this case, they were winning all around. You had to even OWN the game to do any mods. In my opinion, the smart thing would have been to offer these guys a little sponsorship and have them clean it up a little in exchange. Meaning no more nude skins but allow them to continue the custom content. Look at how The Sims community has grown with the support of EA (And if evil EA can do this why can't Techmo?)
