I believe that the level of security and intrusion on privacy that a parent imposes upon their teen should be relative to the idiocy and naivete of said teen. Also, keep in mind that the parent's of extremely tech-savvy students have a virtually impossible task ahead of them in terms of securing their internet usage and privacy. For instance, I am currently using Slackware 10.1 as I type this post. There is no chance in hell my parents could even figure out how to start the X server on this machine, let alone compile protective software. However, my knowledge of security, privacy, and the internet exceeds theirs. Therefore, they don't have to worry about me giving away too much info or getting myself into trouble. In a way any child who gets over-protective measures taken to secure their computer usage can't blame anyone other than themself. Heh, if you really dislike it then learn enough to be able to get around it. ;)
