Microsoft hack wasn't espionage
Kevin Mitnick, special to SecurityFocus 2000-11-05

There are many reasons for a villain to crack Microsoft's network... Industrial espionage just isn't one of them.

"...does not mean his opinions on computer security are valid!"

Please point me to some of his "invalid" opininions!

I find Mr. Mitnick's articles relevant and helpful. He is in a great position to raise necessary red flags about corporate security. Though many of us already grock the inherent protean quality of system vulnerabilities, those on the periphery of the security community need to hear more of this to properly weigh their priorities. As those people realize the difficulty and cost of maintaing a secure infrastructure, they will have the proper respect (read "fear") in their minds. We know that no security model is perfect, but if others know it, our jobs and funding for our projects gets easier. The diligince and attention that our routines require will be even more respected. I don't care about Mr. Mitnick's past, but I appreciate that he understands the nature vulnerabilites more than most. And I appreciate his opininions about the attitudes required to maintain a secure network environment.
