Dell rejects spyware charge
John Leyden, The Register 2005-07-15

Dell has rejected allegations that its PCs come pre-loaded with an intrusive application that spies on users' surfing habits. The equipment manufacturer said there was nothing untoward about My Way Search Assistant despite complaints from customers that the toolbar impares computer performance, changes browser settings and is difficult to remove.

Dell have developed an annoying habit of preinstalling a huge amount of clunky and frankly useless software on their PCs of late. Ordinarily, formatting the disk and reinstalling the operating system was the fastest way to clean out all these irritations (which massively increase the Windows startup time), but since they no longer provide a Windows XP CD with some systems (is that even legal??) that is no longer an option.

Dell deserve kudos for developing good hardware so cheaply, but why must they then cripple it with shoddy gimmicks? It's like building a Ferrari, then supergluing 12 types of fuzzy dice to the engine. The best software for Windows is almost all available for free, nobody needs preinstalled parasites.
