Techies don't get security either

Heads of information security functions are more likely to be business managers than techies in future as companies take a more strategic approach that balances IT security threats against business drivers. That's according to analyst house Gartner which predicts security will evolve into an element of a wider risk management strategy.

I shudder to think about companies enlisting "business" people with little or no technical prowess to bear the responsibility for IT security. If you don't have a good technical background, from PC support to LAN/WAN, you can't effectively understand the risk let alone know what recommendations to make to mitigate it.

I think Gartner's way off base on this one. Risk management in the IT world is a whole different beast from risk management in a purely business sense...
