Blue Security folds under spammer's wrath
Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus 2006-05-17

Israeli anti-spam startup Blue Security decided on Tuesday to shutter its aggressive anti-spam service, citing threats of further--and more malicious--attacks on its service and users.

Score one for the bad guys. This kind of thing is only going to lead to real-world escalation. Mr. Doctor Evil wannabe chortling "my spam or no internet!" in his lair is inviting some TLA agency to make an example of him; there's a certain threshold you cross in which the ineffective (or outright corrupted) TLAs *must* make an example of you for appearances.

SmarmMaster gets jailed or whacked, someone else takes over directing cashflow to the crime ring, nothing really changes.

Frankly, i *really* wouldn't be so sure about a guy taunting a security company in the same place as what houses the Mossad. They've already demonstrated a sort of "hi, we're ready for the last resort now" willingess when a certain line is crossed.

People really need to reconceptualize "spam." It's no longer "some annoying crap in my inbox." Pray tell, what illegal money-making venture has ever been completely ignored or left alone by organized crime?

What's unprecedented, however, is the ability of these gits to make good on their global threats. It's as if drug smugglers could, on a moment's notice, shut down vast sections of highway to everyone else's vehicles...
