Attackers pass on OS, aim for drivers and apps
Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus 2006-08-03

LAS VEGAS--The disappearance of easy-to-find flaws in the major operating systems has pushed vulnerability researchers to branch out from finding security issues in core system software and instead concentrate on the device drivers and client-side agents present on all PCs, security experts said on Wednesday at the Black Hat Briefings.

This shift has been happening for a while now. We should expect attackers to target less defended areas and security has not been been a major priority for many of these applications to date.

Much has been said about the Office applications but my concern is with all applications that are widely deployed. I am particularly thinking of the odd management and support applications that PC vendors, ISPs, etc. provide to their customers - widely deployed but without the quality requirements of paid-for software.
