MySpace teams to create sex-offender database
Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus 2006-12-05

Social networking site MySpace announced on Tuesday that the company has paired up with ID verification firm Sentinel Tech Holding to build a national database of convicted sex offenders, a technology the service hopes will enable it to keep predators out of its community.

I think the email solution won't work. I mean, it's a start and protecting children is definately a priority. But I am sure that there are tons of perverted men on myspace and not even a fraction of them have been convicted. So to prevent a convicted sex offender from using myspace is a smart thing, it's kind of hard to still prevent predators on preying when they are not a convicted sex offender. Yes there is a perl program that matches/tracks description, height, name, age ect... But I think the real solution for myspace is 1) to create a databsse that contains flagged members who are of age and converse with those underage. (Now I would think that the underage would lie about their age so this solution might be effective somewhat). 2) Flag personal emails that contain sexual contents. (Meaning, if someone is talking sexual, capture there username and analyze/track there inbox on myspace. See if that user is also talking sexual with other users. ect... More than likely, it's a predator (a predator does not always have be defined as preying on underage children, they can prey on anyone). Now even if everyone is over age, and this one person is constantly writing other people and talking about sex, it should be flagged brought to the users that this one particular user is doing. Yes, it sounds like a lot of work on behalf of myspace to do, but if your gonna do it, do it right so it's efficient.

Just a thought...
